Alumni Derrek Miller Named PBC Baseball
Player of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga.
(February
12,2008) – Senior catcher
Derrek Miller has been named the Peach Belt Conference's
first Player of the Week for 2008, announced by the league on Tuesday
afternoon. Miller helped the No. 9-ranked Pirates to a pair of
three-game sweeps over top 10-ranked opponents to start the season.
Miller hit
.478 and slugged .870 with six doubles, a home run and 12 RBI in six
games for the Pirates (6-0). The Visalia, Calif., native's biggest hit
came on Saturday as he launched a two-out, two-run home run in the
bottom of the 10th inning to give AASU a 6-4 win over No. 6 Southern
Indiana in game two of a doubleheader sweep.
Miller
also knocked two doubles and drove in three runs in AASU's
season-opening 6-3 win over No. 3 Florida Southern on Feb. 1. He
collected at least one hit in all six games and his six doubles lead all
hitters in the Peach Belt.
Miller is
the seventh different Armstrong Atlantic baseball player to earn PBC
Player of the Week honors over the last four seasons and he is the first
catcher for the Pirates to earn the league's weekly honor since Sean
Hotzak was the Player of the Week on May 2, 2005.
COS Baseball
Fact
COS started its intercollegiate baseball program in
1929, but the program was discontinued from 1932 through 1939 and again from
1941 through 1945. In 1946 Polly Wilhelmsen brought baseball back to the
college. Baseball has been a major part of the COS athletic program, beginning
with the Giants' 25-7 season under coach Pete Beiden in 1947 and including many
successful years under successive coaches Frank Jones, Bud Nygren, Roy Taylor,
Bert Holt, Al Branco and current head coach Jody Allen.
